On Saturday, 4th March 2006, the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, witnessed a world title match between Puerto Rican sensation Miguel Cotto and Italian challenger Gianluca Branco. Promoted by Top Rank & Jenniffer Marin, the fight was aired on HBO Sports and served as Cotto's 5th defense of his WBO World Super-lightweight Title. Both fighters weighed in at 140 lbs, with Cotto boasting an undefeated record of 25-0-0, while Branco entered the ring with a 36-1-1 record.
From the beginning, Cotto showed his dominance with precise and powerful punches, establishing control over the fight. The Puerto Rican star skillfully worked his opponent's body, gradually wearing Branco down throughout the rounds. Although Branco showcased his boxing skills and tactical approach, he was unable to match Cotto's relentless pressure and ferocity.
As the fight progressed, Cotto continued to land heavy blows, with his technical prowess and superior footwork proving too much for the Italian challenger. Branco's defense weakened, and he struggled to keep up with Cotto's speed and power. By the eighth round, it was evident that Cotto was clearly ahead on points on all scorecards.
In the eighth round, Cotto's dominance reached its climax. At 0:49, the referee, Luis Pabon, called the fight as a technical knockout (TKO) after Branco decided he could no longer continue. The Italian's corner threw in the towel, signaling the end of the fight and confirming Cotto's victory.
