Scope Arena

Norfolk's Scope Arena, inaugurated in 1971, has long been a focal point for sports and entertainment in Virginia. Designed by Italian architect Pier Luigi Nervi, the arena boasts a distinctive domed structure and offers seating for approximately 10,000 spectators. Notably, on August 20, 1989, Norfolk native Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker defended his International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight title at this venue, further cementing his legacy as one of the sport's defensive maestros. Another memorable event occurred on July 27, 2002, when former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes concluded his illustrious career by outpointing Eric "Butterbean" Esch over ten rounds at Scope Arena.

More recently, on November 8, 2024, the arena witnessed a homecoming for the Davis brothers—Keyshawn, Kelvin, and Keon—who each secured victories in front of a sold-out crowd of 10,568 fans. This event marked a resurgence of professional boxing in Norfolk, reminiscent of the city's rich pugilistic heritage.

Norfolk's contribution to boxing extends beyond these events. It has produced notable fighters such as Keyshawn Davis, an Olympic silver medalist and rising professional star, and the late Pernell Whitaker, a four-weight world champion renowned for his defensive prowess.
