RAC Arena

RAC Arena, situated in the heart of Perth, Western Australia, exemplifies architectural innovation and versatility in sports and entertainment venues. Officially opened on 10 November 2012, this landmark stands on Wellington Street, close to the historical footprint of the former Perth Entertainment Centre. It emerged as a cornerstone of the Perth City Link project, a visionary urban renewal initiative to revitalise a 13.5-hectare area to connect Perth's central business district with the Northbridge precinct.

The conception and construction of RAC Arena were spearheaded by a Western Australian construction consortium, BGC, following a competitive tender process. The arena's distinctive design, a collaborative masterpiece by Ashton Raggatt McDougall and Cameron Chisholm Nicol, draws inspiration from the complexity and interconnectivity of the Eternity puzzle. This architectural marvel can host up to 13,910 spectators for tennis events, 14,846 for basketball matches, and a staggering 15,000 for concerts, showcasing its adaptability across a spectrum of significant events. The venue features a retractable roof, 36 luxury corporate suites, an expansive 680-bay underground car park, and five dedicated function spaces, underscoring its state-of-the-art facilities.

However, the path to its completion was challenging. Initially estimated at $150 million, the project's cost eventually escalated to $550 million, accompanied by significant delays. The Auditor General's report in 2010 highlighted the initial underestimation of both the cost and timeline, pointing to premature projections made before a comprehensive understanding of the project's scope was established. A notable alteration from the original design was integrating the car park beneath the arena rather than constructing it above the nearby railway line as initially planned.

In 2018, the arena underwent a significant rebranding, adopting the commercial name RAC Arena through a naming rights arrangement with the Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia, valued at approximately $10 million over five years. This partnership marked a strategic move to enhance the venue's commercial viability, following a period during which the Government of Western Australia compensated stadium operator AEG Ogden around $8 million due to the inability to sell naming rights earlier.

Beyond its architectural and commercial narrative, RAC Arena has solidified its reputation as a premier destination for sports, particularly basketball, with its design explicitly accommodating the sport's dynamic nature. The venue's significance in the global sports landscape was further amplified by hosting notable UFC events, including UFC 221: Rockhold vs. Romero in February 2018 and UFC 284: Makhachev vs. Volkanovski in February 2023. Moreover, the announcement of the Vasyl Lomachenko vs George Kambosos Jr fight for the IBF World Lightweight Title in May 2024 underscores RAC Arena's continued prominence in facilitating high-calibre international sporting events.
