Fight Report
In a thrilling battle for the WBA bantamweight championship, Cherneka Johnson (16-2) emerged victorious over Nina Hughes (6-1) in a closely contested majority decision at RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. The Fight was not without controversy, as ring announcer Lt. Dan Hennessey initially declared Hughes the winner, only to correct himself moments later, revealing that Johnson had, in fact, dethroned the British champion.
From the opening bell, Johnson, the larger of the two fighters, sought to establish her jab and power punches to keep Hughes at bay. However, Hughes refused to be intimidated, surging forward in the third round with a flurry of activity, hoping to negate the impact of Johnson's heavier blows during the two-minute rounds.
The fourth round saw Hughes employ an unorthodox tactic, holding Johnson's head while unleashing a barrage of short punches. Johnson responded by backing Hughes onto the ropes with a powerful right hand, leaving the champion bruised under her right eye.
As the Fight progressed, Hughes' relentless attack resulted in Johnson's bloodied nose in the seventh round, raising the stakes heading into the final rounds. Johnson landed a hard right in the eighth, but Hughes shrugged it off and countered with a combination that re-started the Australian's nosebleed.
The Championship Rounds In the ninth, Johnson matched Hughes' activity, landing two head-turning rights within the first minute that visibly diminished the British fighter. Johnson's power punching continued to dictate the pace in the tenth and final round.
The Scorecards At the end of the gruelling battle, the judges' scorecards read 95-95, 96-94, and 98-92, giving Johnson the majority decision victory and the WBA bantamweight title. The win marked a successful move down in weight for Johnson, who previously held the IBF junior featherweight title before losing it to Ellie Scotney in June.
The confusion surrounding the initial announcement of the winner led to a moment of bewilderment for Johnson and heartbreak for Hughes, who had toiled for 15 years as an amateur before turning pro just three years ago.
Despite the chaos, Johnson's power-punching advantage in the later rounds was the deciding factor, leaving Hughes' face a battered, swollen mess by the final bell. The Australian's size advantage and heavy blows were too much for the brave British fighter to overcome.
