Fight Report

In a display of boxing artistry cut short by an unfortunate clash of heads, Sunny Edwards triumphantly returned to the ring, outclassing Adrian Curiel in a flyweight bout that ended in a technical decision victory. The fight in Arizona saw Edwards bounce back from his first professional loss with a performance showcasing his speed, skill, and ring IQ.

From the opening bell, Edwards established his dominance, utilizing his superior hand speed and boxing acumen to keep Curiel at bay. The English fighter's footwork was impeccable, allowing him to evade Curiel's attacks while landing precise counters. Through the first five rounds, it was clear that Edwards was in a class of his own, frustrating the Mexican fighter with his elusive style and sharp punches.

The tide of the fight took a dramatic turn in the sixth round when an accidental head butt opened a significant vertical gash over Edwards' right eye. Despite the injury, Edwards continued to box brilliantly, adapting his strategy to protect the cut while maintaining control of the fight.

As the bout progressed into the later rounds, Edwards' superior boxing skills became even more apparent. He consistently landed clean shots on Curiel while avoiding return fire, much to the frustration of the pro-Curiel crowd. The Mexican fighter, known more for his durability than his power, struggled to find answers for Edwards' speed and movement.

The fight reached an abrupt and controversial end before the start of the ninth round when the ringside doctor deemed the cut over Edwards' eye too severe to continue. This decision sent the bout to the scorecards, resulting in a unanimous technical decision favouring Edwards with scores of 90-82, 88-84, and a surprisingly close 87-85.

In his post-fight interview, Edwards expressed disappointment at the early stoppage, feeling he was on the verge of a more decisive victory. "I don't know if the crowd realizes what happened, but I had nothing to do with this. The referee stopped the fight. I'm more upset than any of the 10,000 fans," Edwards stated, visibly frustrated by the booing from the audience.

The narrow scorecard from judge Chris Wilson raised eyebrows, with Edwards himself questioning the decision. "The last time I came over here, one of the judges didn't give me any rounds, and the ref let him hit me with a thousand low blows, so I don't expect any favours when I come to America, but I thought I was way clear," he remarked.

Looking ahead, Edwards called for a shot at Olympic gold medalist Galal Yafai, declaring himself "the biggest name in the flyweight division." However, the severity of his cut may delay such plans, potentially pushing any high-profile matchups to the end of the year or beyond.

This victory marks a significant step in Edwards' career redemption following his loss to Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez in December. While the early stoppage may have denied fans a more definitive conclusion, Edwards' performance up to that point left little doubt about his superiority in the ring.
