Fight Report

In a stunning display of resilience and determination, Sivenathi Nontshinga orchestrated a remarkable comeback to reclaim his IBF light flyweight title, defeating Adrien Curiel in a thrilling rematch in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Just three months after suffering a devastating second-round stoppage at the hands of Curiel, Nontshinga turned the tables with a dramatic 10th-round victory, solidifying his status as a force to be reckoned with in the boxing world.

From the outset, the rematch promised to be gruelling, with both fighters engaging in a relentless exchange of blows. Curiel, known for his aggressive style, wasted no time pressing the attack, forcing Nontshinga to weather a barrage of punches in close quarters. Despite Nontshinga's efforts to pivot and create angles of attack in the early rounds, Curiel's relentless pressure proved challenging to overcome.

As the fight progressed, Nontshinga found himself repeatedly backed against the ropes, struggling to find space to mount a counteroffensive. With his nose bloodied and Curiel relentlessly targeting his body and head, Nontshinga faced mounting adversity as each round unfolded. However, amidst the relentless exchanges, Nontshinga began to find his rhythm, utilising his jab to create distance and launching calculated counterattacks.

The turning point came in the eighth round, as Nontshinga seized an opportunity to capitalise on Curiel's fatigue, landing a series of powerful blows that left the champion reeling. Buoyed by his newfound momentum, Nontshinga continued to press the attack in the ninth round, overwhelming Curiel with a barrage of punches that had him on the brink of defeat.

In the decisive 10th round, Nontshinga capitalised on Curiel's diminished state, unleashing a relentless assault that left the champion staggering against the ropes. With Curiel unable to mount a defence, the referee stepped in to stop the contest, securing Nontshinga's redemption and reclaiming his title.

Reflecting on his victory, Nontshinga expressed gratitude for the opportunity to avenge his previous loss and credited his team's strategic approach to the rematch. His trainer, Colin Nathan, emphasised that Nontshinga's seemingly counterintuitive tactic of backing against the ropes was a calculated manoeuvre to exploit Curiel's weaknesses.

With victory in hand, Nontshinga now sets his sights on a new goal: becoming the first undisputed champion from South Africa.
