Fight Report

Mexican technician Gilberto Ramirez unified the cruiserweight division in Riyadh with a masterclass of southpaw boxing against Chris Billam-Smith, adding the WBO belt to his WBA title via unanimous decision. The judges' scorecards of 116-112 (twice) and 116-113 reflected Ramirez's superior ring generalship throughout the 12-round contest.

Billam-Smith opened aggressively, finding early success with his right hand against Ramirez's southpaw stance. The momentum shifted in round two as Ramirez's fluid combinations and educated footwork began to dictate the pace. A telling right-left-right sequence established his dominance, forcing Billam-Smith to adjust his initial game plan.

The fight's complexion changed dramatically in the fourth when a cut appeared on Billam-Smith's left eye. Despite trainer Shane McGuigan's instructions to keep Ramirez backing up, the Mexican's precision and work rate proved overwhelming. Billam-Smith showed tremendous heart in the fifth, landing several clean uppercuts in close quarters, but Ramirez's superior shot selection and body attack maintained his advantage.

The middle rounds saw Ramirez showcase his full arsenal. His ability to spin off the ropes, change directions, and counter effectively frustrated Billam-Smith's attempts to close distance. An eighth-round right hook knocked the Brit off balance, though his determination never wavered.

Billam-Smith mounted a brief resurgence in the tenth, prompting Ramirez's corner to demand increased output. The final rounds featured intense exchanges, with both men trading heavy leather in the trenches. Ramirez's unpredictable style and superior ring craft prevailed until the final bell.

Post-fight, Ramirez expressed interest in facing IBF champion Jai Opetaia for further unification, stating: "I want to unify with all the champions. That is the main goal for me."
