Fight Report

Callum Walsh extended his unbeaten run to 15-0 (11 KOs) with a convincing unanimous decision win over Fernando Vargas Jr (now 17-1 (15 KOs)) in a 10-round junior middleweight bout on the Canelo vs. Crawford undercard at Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas. The judges scored the bout 100-90, 99-91, 99-91 all in Walsh’s favour.

Walsh, trained by Freddie Roach and under the promotional spotlight of Dana White’s backing, came into the fight seeking to prove himself against an opponent with a respected name and substantial knockout power. Vargas Jr, the son of former champion Fernando “El Feroz” Vargas, had built an impressive KO record and hoped to use this co-main stage to show he was ready for bigger tests. From the outset, Walsh imposed a game plan based on volume, well-placed body work, and maintaining range, while Vargas Jr attempted to counter and land power punches, particularly body hooks.

Technically, the fight unfolded as a contrast in styles. Both boxers are southpaws, which already adds layers of tactical nuance. Walsh used movement effectively: ferrying Vargas into uncomfortable positions, mixing high-low combinations, and frequently attacking the midsection. In rounds 1 through 4, Walsh focused on measuring distance, using feints and lead hooks, and putting Vargas on the back foot. Vargas, meanwhile, tried to establish a jab and strong right hooks to the body to disrupt Walsh’s rhythm. There were warnings for low blows against Vargas Jr after several body shots that landed low, which forced him to adjust some of his attack patterns.

Punch statistics tell much of the story. Over ten rounds, Walsh landed 182 of 876 total punches (?20.8%), whereas Vargas Jr landed 159 of 451 (?35.3%) punches. Walsh also edged the power punches category: 143 power punches landed versus Vargas Jr’s 113. Walsh’s body work was notably effective, with 73 body shots landed among those power punches compared to Vargas Jr’s 29. In jabs, Vargas Jr actually had better percentages in some rounds, especially rounds 4-7, where he used more frequent jabs and body shot setups. Still, Walsh’s volume and consistent pressure eroded that advantage.

Key moments included Round 1, where Vargas seemingly dropped Walsh with a hook, though it was ruled a slip by referee Harvey Dock. Walsh recovered quickly and showed composure. Round 6 saw Vargas start strong, especially with right hooks to the body, but Walsh closed that round strongly with clean left hands and body shots. Walsh’s ninth round stood out as his most dominant frame: he used footwork, combination punching, and sharp counters to take a clear edge. In the final round, Vargas Jr increased his urgency, attempting to close the gap, but Walsh countered effectively and controlled the ring, sealing the win.

Atmospherically, the fight took place in front of a large and international crowd at Allegiant Stadium, part of a card headlined by Canelo Álvarez vs Terence Crawford. The staging and exposure were considerable, with the fight streamed on Netflix, making it one of Walsh’s biggest stages to date.

The crowd reacted to Vargas Jr’s more aggressive rounds, especially mid-fight, but largely the momentum stayed with Walsh, especially as Vargas Jr’s output dropped in the closing rounds. Observers noted that despite Vargas Jr’s declaration of wanting to make a name, Walsh’s steadier pacing and tactical discipline prevented any late surge from swinging the fight.

For Walsh, the victory affirms his status as a rising contender in the junior middleweight division. At only 24, with 15 straight wins, 11 by knockout, he has shown he can perform under pressure, maintain discipline over ten rounds, and execute a game plan against a fighter with power and pedigree. Vargas Jr, with this first professional loss, falls to 17-1 (15 KOs). While his name and power give him promotional value, this fight exposed areas for development: stamina, consistency in high-output rounds, and perhaps adjusting for fighters who carry pressure and work body shots well.

The result was decisive. Walsh won by unanimous decision, with wide margins on the cards, leaving no doubt about the official verdict. While not a statement that immediately launches him into world title contention, this performance significantly raises his profile and shows promoters and fans that he is more than just hype. The win puts pressure on his next opponents to deliver respectable names, and for Vargas Jr, it’s back to the drawing board to sharpen his advantages. If Walsh continues on this trajectory, fights at higher stakes now feel much more credible.
