Fight Report
Callum Walsh, a 23-year-old Irish super welterweight, improved his record to 10-0 with 8 KOs by stopping Dauren Yeleussinov in the ninth round of their headline fight at Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City on Friday night. With the victory, Walsh claimed the WBC Continental Americas super welterweight title.
Walsh, who trains in Hollywood under the guidance of Freddie Roach and is promoted by Tom Loeffler, showcased his combination punching and nimble footwork from the opening bell. In the second round, he sent Yeleussinov stumbling into the ropes with a flurry and continued dominating the fight.
Yeleussinov, a 37-year-old Kazakh living in Brooklyn, appeared sluggish and struggled to match Walsh's speed and output. Since Tuesday, he reportedly had to cut 20 pounds to make weight for the fight.
Walsh's performance was a step up from his recent unanimous decision win over Ismael Villarreal. He maintained a higher work rate and more consistent offence throughout the fight. By the seventh round, Walsh's punches had taken a toll on Yeleussinov's face, neck, and shoulders.
Referee Eric Dali closely monitored the one-sided contest, warning Yeleussinov multiple times before stopping the fight in the ninth round to prevent further damage.
The win, which was broadcast on UFC Fight Pass, caught the attention of UFC CEO Dana White, who has shown interest in promoting Walsh's fights. With his exciting style, robust backing, and growing fan base, Walsh is on the path to stardom in the super welterweight division.
