Promoted by MP Promotions and aired on ESPN+, the fight marked the first title defense by Matthysse, who weighed in at 147 lbs. Pacquiao, who weighed in at 146 lbs, was looking to regain a world title after losing the WBO welterweight title to Jeff Horn the previous year.

The victory was a significant milestone for Pacquiao, who became the oldest welterweight champion in boxing history at the age of 39.
