Fight Summary

On the evening of 16th September 1995, the Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas played host to an intriguing WBC World Super-lightweight Title contest. Julio Cesar Chavez, in his fourth defense in his second reign, squared off against David Kamau, an undefeated fighter from Nakuru, Kenya. Despite his impressive record, Kamau had not yet faced a contender of Chavez's calibre. The event was staged by Don King Productions and was broadcast on KingVision Pay-per-view. WBC Super-welterweight champion Terry Norris co-headlined the show, defending his title against David Gonzalez.

Chavez, a veteran of the sport with a record of 94-1-1, was unfazed at the prospect of facing the younger, athletic Kamau, whose record of 26-0-0. The first round ended with a headbutt that opened a cut above Chavez's left eye, and by the eighth round, both fighters' noses were bloodied.

Chavez scored a flash knockdown over Kamau in the eighth round, however, Kamau stood his ground and fought hard throughout the twelve-round bout. His long reach posed a challenge to Chavez, preventing him from landing many clean shots. However, Chavez demonstrated his resilience and technical skill, landing his jab and right cross effectively enough to clinch the majority of rounds.

Contrary to his usual style, Chavez was not the stalking, pressuring force he was known for in this fight. Instead, he found himself adapting to Kamau's longer reach and faster feet. He chose to lean on the ropes and exhibit superior upper body movement to avoid Kamau's punches, countering with his own powerful shots when he saw an opening.

The fight concluded with a unanimous decision victory for Chavez. The judges' scorecards read: 117-110 by Carol Castellano, 116-112 by Anek Hongtongkam, and 116-114 by Larry O'Connell..
