On Saturday, June 14, 1997, Oscar De La Hoya defended his WBC World Welterweight Title against David Kamau at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The fight was promoted by Top Rank and aired on HBO World Championship Boxing, drawing in a massive audience from across the world.
Oscar De La Hoya entered the fight as a heavy favorite. He weighed in at 147 lbs, while David Kamau weighed in at 146½ lbs, just half a pound lighter. The two fighters were evenly matched, both in weight and skill, and the stage was set for a thrilling battle.
The fight began with both fighters feeling each other out, trying to find openings in their opponent's defense. De La Hoya, known for his quick and precise jabs, was able to land several strong punches in the first round, but Kamau was able to counter with a few jabs of his own.

Referee Laurence Cole had seen enough and called a stop to the fight at 2:54 of the second round, awarding the victory to De La Hoya by KO.
