The much-anticipated rematch between Julio Cesar Chavez and Frankie Randall took place on Saturday, 7th May 1994, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The fight, promoted by Don King Productions, was broadcast on KingVision Pay-per-view, attracting boxing enthusiasts worldwide. Both fighters were poised for this crucial battle – Chavez with an impressive record of 89-1-1 and Randall with a 49-2-1 record. This bout marked Randall's first defense of the WBC World Super-lightweight Title he had won in their first encounter.
Chavez, hailing from Culiacan, Mexico, had a point to prove, seeking to reclaim his lost title. Randall, on the other hand, from Morristown, Tennessee, aimed to solidify his position as the world champion. Both fighters met the weight requirement, stepping into the ring at a well-prepared 140 lbs.
Referee Mills Lane, known for his fair judgments, presided over the intense clash. It was clear that neither boxer was willing to give an inch, their fierce rivalry adding to the competitive atmosphere.
However, the fight took a decisive turn in the 8th round. At 2:57, an accidental headbutt caused a severe cut above Chavez's right eye, prompting Referee Mills Lane to halt the fight. The decision was a Technical Decision (TD) in favor of Chavez, marking a significant shift in the evening's momentum.
Controversy arose when Randall was penalized 1 point for the unintentional clash of heads, leading to the cut. This point deduction turned out to be the deciding factor in the fight, as it would have otherwise been ruled a draw. Critics pointed out the harshness of the ruling, as the point was deducted for an act that wasn't considered a foul.
