On May 27, 1978, at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, Carlos Palomino and Armando Muniz clashed for the second time, with Palomino defending his WBC World Welterweight title. The rematch came more than a year after their first encounter in January 1977, where Palomino had retained his belt with a 15th-round TKO. This second meeting, also televised on ABC's *Wide World of Sports*, saw Palomino seeking a more decisive victory while Muniz was eager to avenge the earlier loss.
Both fighters came in prepared—Palomino at 147 lbs and Muniz just a pound lighter at 146 lbs. As the fight unfolded, Palomino demonstrated his control and superior technique, consistently using his left jab to set up combinations. Muniz pressed forward, looking to impose his aggressive style, but the champion's measured footwork and counterpunching created difficulties for the challenger.
Palomino's strategy became apparent as the rounds progressed—targeting Muniz's body to slow him down and exploiting defensive gaps. Despite Muniz's relentless pressure, Palomino maintained his composure, methodically breaking down the challenger. The champion's jab and well-placed hooks to the body were particularly effective, forcing Muniz to fight on the back foot more than he might have liked.
By the end of the fight, it was clear that Palomino's calculated approach had given him the upper hand. The judges' scorecards reflected this dominance: Rudy Ortega scored it 148-141, Frank Rustich 148-139, and John Thomas 145-142, all favouring Palomino, who earned a unanimous decision victory. This result cemented Palomino's reign as the WBC Welterweight Champion, marking his sixth successful title defence.
Though game and always dangerous, Muniz did not solve the puzzle of Palomino's skilful boxing and precision. The fight further solidified Palomino's status as a top welterweight of the era, showcasing his ability to adapt and dominate against a rugged and determined challenger like Muniz.
