The January 14, 1979, clash between Carlos Palomino and Wilfred Benitez occurred at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Benitez captured the WBC World Welterweight Title in a split decision victory after 15 rounds. The fight, promoted by Bob Arum's Top Rank, saw Palomino attempting his eighth title defence against a younger, undefeated challenger. At 29, Palomino was considered a dangerous veteran, while the 20-year-old Benitez, already a former WBA Junior Welterweight champion, brought a reputation for being a defensive master.
The matchup appeared closely contested in the early rounds, with Palomino looking to pressure Benitez. However, as the fight continued, Benitez's defensive prowess began dominating the narrative. His ability to slip punches and counter effectively frustrated Palomino, who found it challenging to land clean combinations. By the mid-rounds, Benitez was dictating the rhythm, his speed and sharp jabs keeping Palomino at bay.
Despite Palomino's efforts to up the tempo, he seemed to need more power and precision to hurt Benitez. By the fight's final stages, it was clear that Benitez had taken control, confidently moving around the ring and choosing his moments to strike. Ultimately, the judges delivered a split decision: Referee Jay Edson and Judge Harry Gibbs scored it for Benitez, while Judge Zach Clayton controversially sided with Palomino, 145-142.
The decision raised eyebrows, with many observers feeling Benitez had clearly outboxed the champion, making Clayton's score a focal point of debate. This victory cemented Benitez's place in boxing history as he became the youngest boxer to win world titles in two weight divisions. Conversely, Palomino never got a rematch, leading him to step away from the sport later that year.
