On Wednesday, August 12th, 1959, an anticipated rematch took place at the Forum in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It was an NBA & NYSAC World Light-heavyweight Title bout between Archie Moore, from San Diego with a record of 176 wins, 21 losses, and 9 draws; and Yvon Durelle, a Canadian from Baie-Sainte-Anne, New Brunswick, with 80 wins, 20 losses, and 2 draws under his belt. A record-breaking Montreal crowd of 11,555 spectators filled the arena to witness the spectacle, contributing to a gate revenue of $140,519.
Both pugilists took warmup bouts leading up to this decisive rematch. Moore faced debutant Sterling Davis, a wrestler hailing from Houston, Texas. Despite three knockdowns in the second round, Davis held on until the third round when the fight was stopped due to severe cuts over both of his eyes. Durelle, on the other hand, had faced another debutant, Teddy Burns in Northeastern Maine, managing to end the bout in the third round.
The rematch between Moore and Durelle started with both fighters weighing in nearly equal - Moore at 174¼ lbs and Durelle slightly lighter at 173 lbs. The match was officiated by Jack Sharkey under the promotional management of Eddie Quinn.
In an eventful and somewhat shocking third round, Moore demonstrated his boxing prowess by flooring Durelle four times. Each knockdown further diminished Durelle's chances of making a comeback. With each knockdown, Moore stamped his authority and superiority over Durelle.
Moore delivered the final blow, knocking out Durelle to win the match and leaving referee Jack Sharkey the job of counting the challenger out at 2:52 into the round. The victory, stark in its decisiveness, further established Moore's reputation in the world of boxing.
