Archie Moore vs Tony Anthony

On Friday 20th September 1957 at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, Archie Moore made the 6th defense of his World Light-heavyweight title against New York's Tony Anthony.

At 42, Archie Moore exhibited the strength and resilience that characterized his lengthy career, in contrast to the relatively green 22-year-old Anthony. This fight marked yet another stellar moment for Moore, adding another victory to his tally, pushing it to an impressive 163 wins.

The younger Anthony, however, could not be dismissed as an easy challenge. Before stepping into the ring with Moore, Anthony had shown his prowess in a world title eliminator against Chuck Spieser, following it up with a strong performance against Yvon Durelle which resulted in a draw. Many, including matchmaker George Parnassus, had pegged Anthony as a potential upset due to his recent performances, and his silky skills and agility were seen as possible threats to Moore's title.

Despite the odds, Moore's experience prevailed. A seasoned boxer, Moore maintained a strategic, calculated approach, managing to keep the younger, more aggressive Anthony at bay. Known for his cross-armed defense, Moore absorbed and redirected Anthony's energy, exploiting openings with precision and power. His body shots and fierce jabs visibly wore Anthony down, reducing the latter's manoeuvrability and agility as the rounds progressed.

By the 6th round, Moore had Anthony on the ropes. A powerful hook sent Anthony to the canvas, signalling a significant shift in the momentum of the fight. The subsequent round was marked by Moore's offensive assault, as he sought to end the match decisively. With another powerful blow, Moore sent Anthony crashing to the floor once again.

The seventh round was the end of the road for Anthony. Referee Mushy Callahan counted Anthony out at 2:29 of the round after being felled for the count, declaring Moore the winner by knockout.
