On February 7, 2009, the Stadthalle in Rostock, Germany, played host to a thrilling WBA World Super-lightweight title clash between champion Andriy Kotelnik and undefeated challenger Marcos Maidana. The bout, promoted by Universum Box-Promotion and televised on ZDF and HBO, saw the Ukrainian titleholder Kotelnik (30-2-1) put his belt on the line against the hard-hitting Argentinian Maidana (25-0-0) in what would prove to be a closely contested affair.
Kotelnik, who had captured the title from Welshman Gavin Rees and successfully defended it against Japan's Norio Kimura in Ukraine, entered the ring as the more experienced fighter. Maidana, known for his aggressive style and knockout power, came in with a perfect record and a reputation as a dangerous puncher. Both fighters made weight comfortably, with Kotelnik tipping the scales at 139¾ lbs and Maidana at the division limit of 140 lbs.
The fight itself was gruelling, showcasing the two combatants' contrasting styles. Maidana's relentless pressure was evident from the opening bell as he unleashed a torrent of punches throughout the contest. HBO reported that the Argentinian threw an astounding 1200-plus blows throughout the fight, a testament to his incredible work rate and stamina. Kotelnik, for his part, relied on his technical skills and ring generalship to weather the storm and counter effectively.
As the rounds progressed, the fight remained incredibly close, with both men having their moments. Maidana's aggression and punching gave him an edge in several rounds, while Kotelnik's more precise shots and defensive acumen allowed him to score effectively in others. The championship rounds saw both fighters dig deep, aware that the outcome hung in the balance.
After twelve rounds of intense action, the fight went to the scorecards. In a split decision that reflected the competitive nature of the bout, Kotelnik retained his title by the narrowest of margins. Judge Jean-Louis Legland scored 115-114 for Kotelnik, while Gustavo Padilla saw it 115-113 in favour of Maidana. The deciding scorecard came from Paul Thomas, who had it 115-113 for the champion, allowing Kotelnik to keep his belt.
The victory would prove to be Kotelnik's last as champion. In his next title defence, he would lose the belt to British star Amir Khan in Manchester, England, bringing an end to his reign as WBA Super-lightweight champion. For Maidana, despite the disappointment of his first professional loss, the close nature of the fight and his impressive performance would serve as a springboard to bigger opportunities in the future, cementing his status as one of the division's most exciting contenders.
