At Salvador's Stadio Fonte Nova on October 26, 1999, newly crowned WBO Super Featherweight champion Acelino Freitas made his first title defence against relatively inexperienced Nicaraguan Anthony Martinez. The matchup pitted Freitas's undefeated record (21-0) against Martinez's modest 12-1-2 ledger.
The disparity in experience became evident late in the opening round when Freitas cornered Martinez and unleashed a series of hooks to the head, scoring a knockdown with just 15 seconds remaining. Martinez survived to hear the bell, but the pattern was set.
In round two, Freitas immediately reasserted his dominance, dropping Martinez in the centre of the ring with another combination of head hooks. Though Martinez beat referee William Connors's count, Freitas pursued relentlessly, trapping his opponent on the ropes. A sustained barrage of hooks and uppercuts forced Connors to halt the contest at 1:20 of the second round.
This Forum Boxing/Rui Pontes promotion marked Freitas's first successful title defence, just eleven weeks after his devastating first-round knockout of Anatoly Alexandrov to win the belt.
