The August 9, 2003, unified WBA/WBO super featherweight battle between Acelino Freitas and Jorge Rodrigo Barrios at Miami Arena produced one of the most dramatic final rounds in recent boxing history. Freitas made his third WBA and tenth WBO title defence against the Argentinian challenger in a contest that shifted momentum multiple times before its explosive conclusion.
The scorecards reflected the bout's competitiveness - Peter Trematerra had it even at 105-105, Guy Jutras favored Barrios 106-104, while Dennis Nelson saw Freitas ahead 106-103 before the stoppage. The fight's pivotal moments began in round eight when Barrios caught Freitas off-balance for a knockdown. The eleventh round proved particularly eventful - Barrios dropped Freitas with a left-right combination at 0:42, causing the champion to spit out his mouthpiece. Still, Freitas responded dramatically by flooring Barrios with a mighty right hand to the chin as the round ended.
The final round lasted just 50 seconds but was packed with significant action. Barrios went down 10 seconds in and fell to his knees at 0:44. Though the second fall wasn't ruled a knockdown, Barrios's unsteady legs when rising, prompted referee Jorge Alonso to halt the contest.
The physical toll on Barrios was severe - he suffered a ruptured eardrum after round six and sustained cuts around both eyes. He was visibly deteriorating by the fight's end, even smearing blood on the referee's shirt. In contrast, Freitas emerged virtually unmarked from the contest.
The bout represented a significant test of Freitas's championship mettle. He overcame two knockdowns to secure a dramatic stoppage victory.
