About Yokohama Buntai Boxing Venue
Yokohama Buntai, officially opened in April 2024 on the site of the former Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium, carries forward a deep-rooted legacy in sports and entertainment. The original gymnasium first welcomed spectators on May 23, 1962, and remained in service until its closure in September 2020. The new building, a reinforced concrete and partially steel construction spanning three above-ground levels, respects the past while embracing a modern identity.
At its heart lies a striking arena that accommodates approximately 5,000 fans on a 2,560 m² concrete floor stage, soaring to a ceiling height of 14.5 meters. Complementing this is an expansive wooden-floor gym of approximately 691 m², 11.5 meters tall, alongside 16 dedicated waiting or ancillary rooms and two, or up to four when subdivided, changing areas for athletes and officials. The onsite Blue Wave Café and food-and-drink stalls serve a complete programme of refreshments, grab-and-go pizzas, savoury snacks, soft drinks, and even a house lager, adding modern hospitality to the sport-first design.
Yokohama's storied boxing connection spans decades. While the original gymnasium wasn't exclusively a boxing venue, it served as a training mat and occasional ring site, most famously hosting parts of the 1975 Asian Amateur Boxing Championships. Since reopening, Buntai has already been selected for high?level boxing—including a scheduled WBC flyweight title defence by Kenshiro Teraji against Ricardo Sandoval on July?30,?2025, alongside other world?class bouts. Also, in May 2025, it featured the K?1 Beyond kickboxing event, spotlighting a super?featherweight Grand Prix and multiple title clashes.
The host city of the venue, Yokohama, seamlessly blends its rich port history with athletic achievement. This city has produced boxing greats, such as super-flyweight world champion Katsushige Kawashima, who fought notable title defences at local venues, including the old Buntai and Pacifico Yokohama.
The redevelopment from the 1962 original into today's structure involved public insistence on retaining the informal title "Buntai," preserving its communal identity. With its adaptive seating, flexible floor space, athlete facilities, and vibrant concessions, this 5,000?seat arena is positioning itself as Yokohama's premier mid?sized combat sports destination. It bridges decades of local boxing tradition with a fresh, future?proofed venue capable of hosting world championship fights, amateur tournaments, concerts and community gatherings alike.
