The Royal Dublin Society

The Royal Dublin Society (RDS) is an Irish philanthropic organisation and members club established as the 'Dublin Society' on 25 June 1731. Its primary objective was to foster cultural and economic prosperity in Ireland. Synonymous with its sprawling 160,000 m2 campus in Ballsbridge, Dublin, the RDS boasts premier venues such as the 'RDS Arena', 'RDS Simmonscourt', and 'RDS Main Hall', hosting a myriad of exhibitions, concerts, and sporting events including the prestigious Dublin Horse Show and Leinster Rugby games.

The RDS holds a significant place in Irish society, as evidenced by its ability to nominate candidates for the Seanad Éireann elections on the Agriculture panel. Its origins trace back to the Dublin Philosophical Society, with luminaries such as Thomas Prior playing pivotal roles in its establishment. Over time, the Society expanded its mandate to include farming, manufacturing, the arts, and sciences, reflecting a broad agenda aimed at stimulating economic activity and fostering innovation.

One of the Society's notable initiatives was the introduction of a premium scheme in 1738, championed by Samuel Madden, to incentivise improvements in agriculture and the arts. Parliament's subsequent financial support further bolstered the Society's endeavours, culminating in adopting the "Royal" prefix in 1820 with the patronage of George IV.

In 1879, the RDS acquired its current premises in Ballsbridge, which have since been expanded to encompass forty acres. Today, the campus features state-of-the-art facilities, including exhibition halls, a multi-purpose sports stadium, meeting rooms, and dining establishments.

Among the notable events hosted at the RDS Arena was the historic boxing match between Barry McGuigan and Danilo Cabrera on February 15, 1986. McGuigan's hard-fought victory saw him retain his WBA featherweight title in front of an electrified home crowd.

In subsequent years, the RDS Arena underwent significant renovations, expanding its capacity to accommodate various sporting events, including home games for the Leinster Rugby team. The arena's strategic location near public transportation hubs ensures easy accessibility for event patrons.
