Entertainment and Sports Arena

The Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington, D.C., opened its doors in September 2018, marking a new chapter in the city's sporting landscape. Located on the St. Elizabeths East Campus in Congress Heights, this multi-purpose facility has quickly become a hub for athletic competition and entertainment events.

Construction of the rena began in February 2016, with the project initially estimated to cost $65 million, 90% of which was to be funded by taxpayers. However, as is often the case with large-scale developments, the final price tag climbed to $68.8 million due to unforeseen expenses and additions. Despite the cost overruns, the arena has proven to be a valuable asset to the community, serving as the practice facility for the NBA's Washington Wizards and the home court for the WNBA's Washington Mystics.

Since its inception, the Entertainment and Sports Arena has hosted diverse events, showcasing its versatility. In October 2018, it welcomed its first major sporting event with PFL 10, a mixed martial arts competition. The venue has also been the stage for significant basketball tournaments, including the Coastal Athletic Association men's and women's basketball championships.

The city has produced notable fighters such as Sugar Ray Leonard and Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson. It has hosted legendary bouts like the 1973 fight between Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton at the Capital Centre in nearby Landover, Maryland.

The arena's impact extends beyond sports, as it has become a popular entertainment venue. All Elite Wrestling has held multiple television tapings at the facility, and New Japan Pro-Wrestling has chosen it as the site for their Capital Collision pay-per-view events. These diverse bookings demonstrate the arena's ability to attract local and international promotions, solidifying its place in Washington, D.C.'s entertainment landscape.
