About Arena Coliseo Boxing Venue

Arena Coliseo de San Luis Potosí was a privately operated indoor arena in the city’s historic center, best known as the local home of lucha libre. It opened on February 5 1958, within the Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Industria Cinematográfica (STIC) complex, located off Avenida Pedro Moreno, where its entrance was situated above the casino and social halls that shared the site. Contemporary accounts describe steep wooden bleachers that could hold roughly 1,800 spectators on busy nights. The building remained a promoter-run venue—long associated with local wrestling figure Curro Hernández—rather than a municipal or national arena property.

The arena was consistently billed as Arena Coliseo de San Luis Potosí (often shortened to Arena Coliseo SLP or simply Arena Coliseo). Its principal use for more than five decades was professional wrestling, with regular Sunday bills and special attractions. The hall closed after a farewell show on December 7, 2014. A short-lived revival of lucha cards occurred in 2023. Still, by 2024, the premises were reportedly repurposed for retail use, marking the end of the arena’s run at its long-time address: Avenida Pedro Moreno 220, Barrio de Santiago/Centro, San Luis Potosí.

Boxrec.com lists professional boxing fight cards going back to 2007, but boxing promotions were likely held at Arena Coliseo de San Luis Potosí long before that. WBO World Featherweight Champion Rafael Espinoza defended his title against Ukraine’s Arnold Khegai on Saturday 15, November 2015.
