Araneta Coliseum

The Smart Araneta Coliseum, famously known as "the Big Dome," is a centrepiece of Philippine sports and entertainment, nestled in the bustling area of Cubao, Quezon City. The journey of the Araneta Coliseum began with J. Amado Araneta's vision in the 1950s, drawing inspiration from iconic venues like New York City's Madison Square Garden. This vision was brought to life through the architectural and engineering expertise of Dominador Lacson Lugtu and Leonardo Onjunco Lugtu, culminating in a venue that stood as the most giant-covered coliseum in the world from 1960 to 1963. Its innovative design features, including a clear span dome measuring 108 meters in diameter, established it as a pioneering structure in Asia and one of the largest of its kind globally.

The coliseum's opening event, a boxing match featuring Gabriel "Flash" Elorde, set the tone for its future as a premier venue for sports. Over the years, it has hosted significant sporting events. One is the historic "Thrilla in Manila" in 1975, a bout that remains etched in boxing lore due to the fierce competition between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. Beyond boxing, the Smart Araneta Coliseum has been a critical venue for basketball. It serves as the main stage for the Philippine Basketball Association and various collegiate leagues, underscoring its role in nurturing Filipino sports talent.

The enhancements made in preparation for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, including installing a new LED video board and refurbishing seating areas, illustrate the ongoing commitment to maintaining the coliseum's reputation as a world-class facility.
