Fight Report
Kazakh southpaw Sultan Zaurbek extended his unbeaten record with a unanimous decision victory over Damien Wrzesinki in a 10-round lightweight contest televised on ProBox TV. The bout in Ireland showcased Zaurbek’s power and persistence against a mobile and game opponent, culminating in a knockdown in the final round. The judges scored the fight 98-91 and 97-92 twice, moving Zaurbek to 19-0 (13 KOs) while Wrzesinki fell to 28-4-2 (7 KOs).
The opening round set the tone for Zaurbek’s approach as he targeted both the head and body, probing for openings. Wrzesinki, on the other hand, sought to counter with sharp left hands while staying on the move. Zaurbek displayed glimpses of power with a menacing left hand that missed its mark but hinted at the threat he posed.
By the second round, Wrzesinki’s face was reddening under Zaurbek’s steady pressure, but the Pole responded with a short left hook in the third that opened a cut near Zaurbek’s right eye. The Kazakh southpaw reacted aggressively, though Wrzesinki stayed composed, landing counters and using his footwork to avoid prolonged exchanges. Both fighters received warnings for head clashes during the round, a sign of the physicality in close quarters.
Zaurbek’s attempts to close the distance in the fourth and fifth rounds were frustrated as Wrzesinki moved effectively, using every inch of the ring to stay out of range. Zaurbek connected with his left hand sporadically, but his inability to follow up made him appear one-dimensional at times.
The fight opened up in the eighth when Zaurbek landed a long left hand that caused Wrzesinki to stumble. Sensing the moment, Zaurbek pressed forward, forcing Wrzesinki into defensive mode while the Pole attempted to fire back with limited success.
In the ninth round, Zaurbek began to assert his dominance, combining a left hand with a right hook that pushed Wrzesinki further into retreat. By the final round, Wrzesinki’s movement had slowed, and his earlier mobility was fading as Zaurbek continued to apply pressure. A clean left hand from Zaurbek finally sent Wrzesinki to the canvas. Though the Pole beat the count, he appeared marked and weary, allowing Zaurbek to coast through the final moments and play to the crowd.
The decision reflected Zaurbek’s control over the fight, though Wrzesinki’s ability to frustrate the Kazakh for stretches demonstrated his durability and experience. For Zaurbek, the performance further cemented his status as a rising force in the lightweight division. However, his struggle to close the distance against a mobile opponent suggests areas for improvement as he eyes higher-level competition.
