Fight Report
Shakur Stevenson successfully defended his WBC lightweight crown against Artem Harutyunyan at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, displaying technical brilliance that left boxing purists in awe. The undefeated champion's homecoming bout showcased his exceptional skill set yet simultaneously raised questions about his ability to captivate casual fans.
From the opening bell, the contrast in styles was evident. Harutyunyan, the Armenian-born German challenger, embodied perpetual motion with his unorthodox, twitchy style. His constant movement and quick flurries initially puzzled Stevenson, who took a measured approach in the early rounds.
Stevenson's extraordinary defensive skills and pinpoint accuracy began to shine as the fight progressed. The Newark native's economy of motion was a stark contrast to Harutyunyan's frenetic energy. By the third and fourth rounds, Stevenson had found his range, and in the fifth, he began to assert his dominance with crisp combinations to both head and body.
Harutyunyan's game plan was clear, stay mobile, avoid being a stationary target and keep Stevenson honest with the sporadic offence.
However, the champion's ring IQ proved too high a hurdle. Stevenson controlled the centre of the ring, forcing Harutyunyan to circle and retreat constantly.
The sixth round saw a momentum shift as Stevenson landed a punishing body shot that visibly affected Harutyunyan. From this point on, the challenger's offence became more defensive, his primary goal seemingly to survive rather than win.
As the fight entered its later stages, Stevenson's pressure increased. He walked Harutyunyan down with growing confidence, though the German showed heart by occasionally attempting to fire back. While commendable, these brief offensive spurts from Harutyunyan served to highlight Stevenson's defensive prowess more than to turn the tide of the fight.
The championship rounds saw Stevenson in complete control yet unable or unwilling to find the extra gear needed to seek a stoppage. This inability to emphatically close the show has become a recurring theme in Stevenson's recent outings, leaving some fans and pundits wanting more from the supremely talented champion.
When the final bell rang, there was no doubt about the outcome. The judges' scorecards reflected Stevenson's dominance, with tallies of 119-109, 118-110, and a somewhat generous 116-112 favouring the champion.
In his post-fight interview, Stevenson acknowledged the difficulty of making a statement against an opponent focused on survival. He also expressed frustration at being unable to secure fights with top names like Vasiliy Lomachenko and Gervonta Davis, who seem more interested in facing each other.
As Stevenson progresses in his career, the question remains: Can he find the perfect balance between his technical brilliance and the crowd-pleasing style that creates superstar appeal?
