Fight Report

The WBO super welterweight title changed hands in a gruelling, blood-soaked battle at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Sebastian Fundora defeated the previously unbeaten Tim Tszyu by a split decision. Fundora also claimed the vacant WBC belt, joining his sister Gabriela as a world champion.

From the third round onwards, both fighters were bleeding profusely - Fundora from the nose and Tszyu from a horrible cut above his hairline caused by an accidental elbow at the end of the second round. The cut completely changed the complexion of the fight, with Tszyu having to commit more and Fundora making him pay.

Despite the best efforts of their corners, neither injury could be contained, and the fight became a dramatic, gory spectacle. Tszyu's head wound was particularly severe, gushing relentlessly and affecting his vision.

Fundora, who had taken the fight at short notice, showed improved boxing skills alongside his renowned heart and toughness. He used his natural attributes to keep Tszyu at range and landed effective punches throughout.

Tszyu had some success, particularly with his right hand to the body, but the cut proved too much to overcome. In a captivating final round, both fighters gave everything, bringing the crowd to its feet.

The judges were split in their decisions, with Tim Cheatham scoring 116-112 for Tszyu, overruled by David Sutherland (115-113 for Fundora) and Steve Weisfeld (116-112 for Fundora).

After the fight, former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence entered the ring and challenged Fundora, who seemed open to the idea. For Tszyu, it was a disappointing end to a disastrous week for Australian boxing, following losses for Liam Wilson and Michael Zerafa.

The final punch stats showed Fundora landed 257 of 820 punches (31%), while Tszyu connected with 209 of his 589 punches (35%). There were no knockdowns, but this fight will live long in the memory for the incredible courage and resilience shown by both men in the face of adversity.

With the win, Fundora improves to 21-1-1 (13 KOs), while Tszyu suffers its first defeat and falls to 24-1 (17 KOs).
