Fight Report
Ruben Villa IV (22-1, 7 KOs) won a unanimous decision over Cristian Cruz (22-7-1, 11 KOs) in a 10-round featherweight bout on Saturday at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. The fight was the main event of the preliminary card, broadcast on ESPN+, ahead of the Jared "Big Baby" Anderson vs Ryad Merhy heavyweight main event.
Villa, a 26-year-old from Salinas, California, dominated the early rounds with a sharp jab that consistently snapped Cruz's head back and disrupted his offence. As the fight wore on, Villa occasionally abandoned his jab to get inside and pierce Cruz against the ropes, seeking to land more damaging blows.
Despite being roughed up by Villa, Cruz, a 27-year-old from Tijuana, Mexico, had his moments, particularly in the fifth round when he managed to land some effective body shots. However, he could not significantly hurt Villa and was backed up against the ropes for extended periods in the latter half of the fight.
Although his jab proved an effective scoring weapon, Villa's corner encouraged him to increase his aggression and pressure Cruz. Villa obliged, becoming more assertive with his footwork and punch output, forcing Cruz to retreat. In the eighth round, Villa unleashed a sustained assault while Cruz was trapped against the ropes.
Although Cruz managed to survive until the final bell, there was little doubt about the fight's outcome. The judges scored the bout 98-92 twice and 97-93, all favouring Villa, who claimed a vacant minor featherweight title with the impressive performance.
