Fight Report
Within the bright confines of California’s Chumash Casino, two undefeated super-flyweights, Mizuki Hiruta and Naomy Cardenas Gomez, met in a contest underscored by contrasting ring personalities. The bout, serving as the chief support on a 360 Promotions card, marked Hiruta’s fifth defence of her WBO junior bantamweight title and her third straight performance on American soil. Entering the ring as the champion from Tokyo by way of Los Angeles, Hiruta carried an 8-0 (2 KOs) record, rapid technical acclaim, and a growing cult following for both her pop-culture swagger and her sharp, southpaw ring craft. Her challenger, Chihuahua’s unbeaten “Kusa” Cardenas, arrived off the strength of a split-decision over Bree Howling, bringing a 9-0 (2 KOs) ledger and the reputation of a relentless pressure fighter who had never known defeat.
The contest opened with both women seeking their tactical range, but it was Hiruta who dictated terms from the opening bell. Utilising a precise jab and marshalling lateral footwork, the champion kept Cardenas at bay, landing a clean uppercut in the second round that drew audible reaction from the arena faithful. Kryruta’s combinations, coupled with brisk head movement and a capacity to maintain distance, left her opponent reaching and overextending, unable to impose the inside exchanges that had characterised Cardenas’s previous wins. The challenger, failing to scale the division’s limit at the weigh-in, entered the fight unable to capture the title even in victory. This regulatory setback did little to dim her aggression throughout the bout.
As the rounds unfolded, Cardenas continued to press forward with characteristic urgency, throwing volume in search of any breakthrough. Hiruta’s defences, honed under the Los Angeles tutelage of Manny Robles, answered with nimble pivots and lead right hooks—picking holes in Cardenas’s guard and defusing her offence with sharp counter-punches. The Japanese champion’s timing shone most vividly as she repeatedly landed clean shots whenever the Mexican attempted to close the gap. By the midpoint rounds, a familiar rhythm had settled over the fight: Cardenas coming forward with dogged intent, Hiruta picking her off with counters, angles, and superior ring generalship. Onlookers noted the disparity in landed punches and overall accuracy, with the champion’s connect percentage well exceeding her challenger’s throughout.
Despite being outboxed, Cardenas never relented, earning credit from fans and observers for her willingness to wade through fire in pursuit of the champion. Her best moments were achieved during reckless inside exchanges in the second half of the bout; yet, each attempt to disrupt Hiruta’s tempo was met with a response that underscored the gap between solid contender and elite operator. Judges’ scores reflected the contest’s one-sided complexion, with two tallies at 100-90 and a third at 98-92 for the defending champion. The result extended Hiruta’s unbeaten mark to 9-0 (2 KOs), while Cardenas suffered her first professional defeat, falling to 9-1 (2 KOs).
