Fight Report
Mexican Luis Alberto Lopez successfully defended his IBF featherweight title against mandatory challenger Reiya Abe in a compelling bout that concluded with a referee stoppage in the eighth round. The match, which unfolded at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York, saw Lopez leverage an aggressive and unconventional fighting style to dominate Abe, culminating in a victory at the 39-second mark of the round.
The fight's pivotal moment occurred in the second round when Lopez connected with a left hook, or possibly a left thumb, causing immediate swelling and discolouration around Abe's right eye. Despite the injury, Abe demonstrated commendable resilience, continuing the fight for six more rounds before the referee deemed a stoppage necessary to prevent further damage.
Lopez, known for his pressure and awkward attack patterns, initiated the fight with a barrage of body and head shots that Abe struggled to evade. This aggressive strategy paid dividends in the second round with the injury to Abe's eye, complicating Abe's ability to defend against Lopez's unorthodox strikes.
Throughout the subsequent rounds, Abe attempted various tactics to counter Lopez's relentless offence, moving and throwing punches in spurts but unable to mount a significant challenge. The ringside physician's repeated checks on Abe underscored the seriousness of the injury, with warnings that a worsening condition would necessitate ending the fight.
Despite Abe's best efforts, Lopez's control over the bout became increasingly apparent, with CompuBox statistics highlighting the disparity in their performances. By the seventh round, Lopez's output and effectiveness dwarfed Abe's, setting the stage for the eighth-round stoppage.
Following his victory, Lopez, the 30-year-old champion from Mexicali, Mexico, expressed his determination to conclude the fight in the eighth round, motivated by the presence of his family ringside. This win marks Lopez's third successful defence of the IBF title he secured from Josh Warrington and follows notable defences against Michael Conlan and Joe Gonzalez.
Looking ahead, Lopez voiced his ambition to unify the featherweight division and did not rule out moving up to junior lightweight for further challenges, indicating an openness to face the winner of the upcoming bout between Oscar Valdez and Liam Wilson.
For Abe, the 30-year-old from Japan, this defeat marks a setback in his professional record, now standing at 25-4-1. Despite the loss, Abe's resilience and determination throughout the fight until the referee's intervention demonstrated his fighting spirit and capability.
