Fight Report

In a historic night for Welsh boxing, Lauren Price put on a masterful performance to claim the WBA welterweight title from Jessica McCaskill at the Cardiff International Arena. The hometown hero dominated the fight from start to finish, forcing the doctor to stop the contest before the beginning of the ninth round due to a severe injury to McCaskill's left eye.

Price, the first Welsh female boxing Olympic gold medalist, showcased her exceptional skills and ring IQ throughout the bout. The southpaw's sharp shooting and tactical movement proved too much for the now-former champion, who needed help finding an answer to Price's elusive style. Despite being known for her technical prowess, Price also demonstrated a willingness to engage in toe-to-toe exchanges with McCaskill, particularly by the end of the second round.

McCaskill found it increasingly difficult to pin down the Welsh fighter as the fight progressed. Under the tutelage of former middleweight contender Robert McCracken, Price expertly manoeuvred in and out of range, landing crisp shots and countering McCaskill's attempts to close the distance. The American's frustration grew as the rounds ticked by, and she had little success in her efforts to turn the tide.

Compounding McCaskill's troubles was a nasty cut on her scalp and a rapidly swelling left eye, the latter a result of several accidental head clashes throughout the contest. The 39-year-old's corner worked diligently to contain the swelling, but the damage became increasingly apparent.

Price's dominance was evident in the scorecards, with all three judges scoring the fight 90-82 in her favour at the time of the stoppage. The Welsh fighter's speed, both in hand and foot, proved to be the deciding factor, as she consistently outmanoeuvred and out boxed her opponent.

Despite the one-sided nature of the fight, McCaskill's spirit never wavered. The Chicago native continued to march forward, even as Price's right hooks found their mark with increasing frequency. However, the damage to McCaskill's left eye had reached a critical point, and the ringside doctor, Neil Scott, advised referee Michael Alexander to halt the contest before the start of the ninth round.

In her post-fight interview, a gracious Price credited her opponent, stating, "I know I had a tough fight tonight. Credit to my opponent, Jessica. I respect her and the way she's been with me. She's a credit to boxing, and I believe this is just the start. I want to create a legacy. I enjoyed myself in there tonight. I'm only going to get better. It's my seventh professional fight. I'm still learning."

With this victory, Lauren Price not only becomes the WBA welterweight champion but also etches her name in the annals of Welsh boxing history as the country's first female world champion. Her impressive performance against a seasoned veteran like McCaskill is a testament to her immense potential and the bright future ahead.

Price has WBO champion Sandy Ryan waiting in the wings as a unification match that would sell well in the UK at any time.
