Fight Report

Jack Catterall scored a decisive victory over Josh Taylor in their eagerly awaited rematch, held at Leeds' First Direct Arena. This bout was a highly anticipated sequel to their controversial first encounter in February 2022, where Catterall, despite appearing to many as the clear winner, was denied victory by a contentious split decision favouring Taylor.

In their rematch, Catterall narrowly edged Taylor, the former undisputed champion, at 140 lbs. From the outset, he showcased his southpaw skills, flicking out an accurate jab that kept Taylor at bay. Taylor, weighing in at 139 1/2 lbs, found himself in a familiar predicament, unable to land his jab effectively while wary of Catterall's sharp counter-punching.

Taylor attempted to shift the momentum in the second round with a left uppercut, but an accidental clash of heads temporarily halted his progress. Both fighters felt the sting, though neither was cut. Catterall quickly retaliated with a right uppercut and a left hand, maintaining the high-octane, bruising action.

In the third round, Taylor landed a left hand that momentarily staggered Catterall. However, Catterall quickly regained his composure, responding with a flurry of punches. Taylor appeared sharper and more focused than in their first encounter, but Catterall's consistent jabs and strategic movement kept him in control.

Catterall slowed the pace in the fourth round, using his jab and moving around the ring. He capitalized on this momentum in the fifth round, landing a series of left hands that visibly hurt Taylor. As the round ended, Catterall pushed Taylor into the ropes with a hard combination, putting the Scotsman in a mini-crisis.

By the sixth round, both fighters showed signs of battle—Catterall with a bruise under his left eye and Taylor with an eye starting to swell shut. Despite Taylor's attempts to turn the tide, Catterall's slick movement and evasive skills continued to frustrate him. The counter left hand remained a potent weapon for Catterall.

Taylor succeeded in the seventh round, targeting Catterall's body with a right hook that set up a left hook to the head. Sensing a potential weakness, Taylor pressed the attack, making the bout increasingly competitive.

In the eighth round, Taylor was on the front foot, landing cleaner shots as Catterall struggled to maintain his earlier rhythm. However, Catterall regained control in the ninth round with a hard, snappy jab followed by powerful left hands. Taylor responded bravely, and the round ended with both fighters exchanging intense blows.

As the fight progressed into the later rounds, it became a contest of fine margins. Taylor injected pace into the 10th round, but Catterall's jab and left hand continued to land effectively. Blood streamed from Taylor's nose as he pressed forward, only to walk into a huge left hand from Catterall. The impact drove Taylor back into a corner; although he recovered, it was a defining moment.

In the final round, both fighters left everything in the ring. Catterall, determined not to repeat his previous mistake of coasting, aggressively pursued victory. Taylor, undeterred, continued to advance. As the final bell sounded, both men raised their arms, believing they had done enough.

The judges delivered a unanimous decision in favour of Catterall. Kieran McCann and Mark Bates scored the fight 117-111, while Lee Every saw it 116-113. This victory allowed Catterall to finally move past the spectre of their first fight, with his record now standing at 29-1 (13 KOs). Taylor, now 19-2 (13 KOs), was gracious in defeat, acknowledging the fairness of the result.
