Fight Report
Harlem Eubank extended his unbeaten streak to 20-0 (8 KOs) with a contentious and chaotic eight-round decision victory over Nurali Erdogan at Newcastle’s Walker Activity Dome. The scorecards, reading 77-73, 79-70, and 77-72, reflected Eubank’s dominance in spots, but the fight was marred by frequent clinching, point deductions, and a clash of styles that never fully gelled.
Eubank, moving up to welterweight after a career at junior welterweight, began on the front foot, working the jab and targeting the body with sharp combinations. Erdogan, 16-4 (1 KO), leaned on physicality rather than finesse, initiating clinches and making the action scrappy. Early warnings from referee Ron Kearney for hitting and holding and an awkward tumble to the canvas at the first bell set the tone for an untidy encounter.
The second round showed flashes of quality from Eubank, who landed a crisp left hook upstairs and a left to the body, but Erdogan’s ruggedness disrupted the Brighton fighter’s rhythm. By the fourth, the crowd’s energy waned as repeated clinching and another dual tumble sapped momentum. Kearney threatened to disqualify both if the action didn’t clean up.
Erdogan landed a notable left hook in the sixth that drew a reaction from Eubank, but the Frenchman’s excessive pushing cost him a point, compounding his frustration. Despite sporadic success, Erdogan’s roughhouse tactics couldn’t consistently break through Eubank’s movement and evasiveness.
As the fight wore on, Eubank absorbed further warnings for infractions on the inside, and a head clash in the seventh opened a cut over his left eye. Erdogan’s aggression persisted, but his inability to sustain clean work turned the bout into a battle of survival rather than skill.
In the eighth, the referee docked another point from Erdogan for wrestling Eubank to the floor and, shortly after, penalized Eubank for coming in low with his head. The chaotic final moments saw a fleeting exchange of left hooks and more spilt blood from Eubank’s cut.
Both fighters appeared frustrated with the night’s proceedings when the final bell sounded. Post-fight, Eubank reflected, “It was very frustrating, but we were prepared. Tricky style tonight, but I went in there and got the job done. I’m happy. I felt strong in there.”
The win marked Eubank’s first fight in over a year following the cancellation of a high-profile bout with Adam Azim.
