Fight Report
Gervonta Davis moved up two weight divisions and stopped WBA world super-lightweight champion Mario Barrios in the 11th round at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta in Showtime's Pay-Per-View main event.
The brave and tough Barrios fought valiantly but was up against a phenomenal puncher in the 5ft 5" southpaw from Baltimore, and even with a 5-inch height advantage coupled with an edge in natural weight, it always felt just a matter of time before the 26-year-old from San Antonio, Texas would fall to the power of Davis' punches.
Barrios fought like a man who believed he would win, matching Davis through the first half of the fight, but then the weight of Davis' shots began to tell on the taller fighter and Davis dropped Barrios twice in the 8th round and then finished the fight at 2:13 of the 11th.
Barrios can come again but Davis showed that he is a special talent capable of moving between 130 - 140lbs and knocking out quality opponents.
Even with wins over Jose Pedraza and Leo Santa Cruz, Davis' resume is still lacking a career-defining fight. A win over Lomachenko, Lopez, Haney, Garcia (Ryan), or the likes of Josh Taylor would secure Tank's legacy. Of course, he is still only 26-years-old so time is on his side.
