Fight Report
In a rare display of aggressive boxing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Dmitry Bivol reaffirmed his status as one of the premier light heavyweight boxers by delivering a sixth-round knockout against Malik Zinad. This bout, held on the 5 vs 5 bill, showcased Bivol's superior skills and strategic acumen and marked his first knockout victory since 2018.
Malik Zinad, who recently claimed a majority decision victory over Jerome Pampellone in Australia just five weeks prior, stepped into the ring with commendable courage. Facing one of the world's top light heavyweights, Zinad showed no sign of backing down. Although his arsenal was primarily limited to a persistent jab, Zinad demonstrated heart and resilience. He recovered from an early knockdown in the first round. He even taunted Bivol after the fourth round, a gesture that perhaps underscored his world's spirit but hinted at his desperation.
From the opening bell, Zinad attempted to establish his jab to keep the formidable Bivol at bay. However, Bivol, with his unflappable demeanour, patiently waited for his moment. Zinad's initial success with the jab was short-lived. In a crucial moment of the first round, after Zinad lingered too long post an overhand right, Bivol capitalized with a swift three-punch combination, beginning and ending with a left hook that floored Zinad.
Despite the setback, Zinad resumed his jab-centric strategy, mixing in the right hand. Yet, Bivol's defence remained nearly impenetrable, as he easily blocked most of Zinad's attempts. There were fleeting moments where Bivol seemed at risk of falling into a repetitive pace, a critique that has surfaced even in his most commanding performances.
A notable incident occurred at the end of the fourth round when Zinad approached Bivol and pressed his forehead against his opponent's, seemingly taunting the undefeated champion. While the psychological impact of this action remains debatable, it certainly did not aid Zinad's cause.
Entering the fifth round, Bivol shifted gears. He began to press forward with increased intensity, closing the distance and forcing Zinad into a more exhausting defensive position. The gap in skill and class between the two fighters was becoming increasingly apparent, and the prospect of another decision win for Bivol began to look increasingly unlikely.
In the sixth round, Bivol unleashed his full arsenal. A precise left hook followed by a devastating straight right hand caught Zinad flush on the jaw, signalling the beginning of the end. With Zinad reeling, Bivol launched a relentless barrage of punches, driving his opponent into the ropes and eventually into the corner. The onslaught was so overwhelming that referee Howard Foster had no choice but to stop the fight at 2:06 of the sixth round.
This victory was significant for Bivol, bringing his record to an unblemished 23-0 with 12 knockouts. The knockout also ended a drought that had lasted for six years and nine fights since his last stoppage win against Sullivan Barrera in New York. Reflecting on his performance, Bivol expressed confidence in his power, stating, "I believed that my power was every time with me. I didn't have doubt."
Bivol had initially been slated to face Artur Beterbiev for the undisputed light heavyweight championship, a bout that had to be postponed due to Beterbiev's knee injury. Following Bivol's decisive win over Zinad, it was announced that the highly anticipated clash with Beterbiev has been rescheduled for October and promises to be a thriller between two of the division's best, with Bivol's recent performance adding to the anticipation.
