Fight Report

Rising super middleweight prospect Diego Pacheco (21-0, 17 KOs) faced a stern challenge in Shawn McCalman (15-1, 7 KOs) on Saturday night at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas. The 10-round bout, which served as the co-main event to the Richardson Hitchins-Gustavo Lemos main event on a DAZN-streamed card, saw Pacheco emerge victorious by unanimous decision. In his favour, judges scored the contest 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94.

Pacheco, a 23-year-old Los Angeles native, entered the fight riding a nine-fight knockout streak. However, McCalman proved a formidable opponent, employing tactics to neutralize Pacheco's power punching. Utilizing his 82-inch reach, McCalman effectively kept Pacheco at bay with his jab in the early rounds while roughing him up on the inside when the distance closed. McCalman even managed to snap Pacheco's head back with a hard left hand in Round 2, suggesting he could hurt the highly touted prospect.

Faced with McCalman's effective strategy, Pacheco showed his adaptability by accepting that he would need more time to land his trademark right-hand power shots from midrange. Instead, he pivoted to throwing shorter punches on the inside, demonstrating his willingness to engage in close-quarters combat.

At times, McCalman's tactics completely shut down Pacheco's offence, reminiscent of the punch-snuffing wiles employed by former super middleweight champion Andre Ward. However, McCalman's tendency to clinch too often and attack too infrequently may have cost him rounds on the judges' scorecards.

As the fight progressed, Pacheco began to find success with his inside fighting, landing more frequently and forcing McCalman to abandon his jab instead of clinching. Each time McCalman clinched, he had to face Pacheco's combination punching at close range, slowly shifting the momentum in Pacheco's favour.

While McCalman was never seriously threatened with being stopped or knocked down, Pacheco's right hands became increasingly clean and effective in the later rounds.

After a difficult start, Pacheco likely swept the second half of the fight, securing the unanimous decision victory. Speaking to DAZN's Chris Mannix post-fight, Pacheco expressed his desire to face a top-10-ranked opponent in his next outing, though he did not specify a particular name.
The win over McCalman was a valuable learning experience for the young Pacheco, who showed his ability to overcome adversity and adapt to a challenging style. Pacheco will undoubtedly face even tougher tests as he continues his ascent in the super middleweight division. Still, his performance against McCalman suggests he has the skills and determination to succeed at the highest level.
