Fight Report
Former IBF, IBO, WBA, and WBO world heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr had to pick himself off the canvas in the 2nd round and see out a tough 3rd before he got his 12 round heavyweight comeback bout with Chris Arreola under control. Ruiz Jr ran out a clear winner on the judge's scorecards.
Scores: Lou Moret 118-109 | Pat Russell 118-109 | Zachary Young 117-110.
Arreola is a hard night's work for the best heavyweights out there even though he is 40-years-old. A veteran of three failed world heavyweight title attempts, he showed in his last outing, a 12 round points loss to the then-undefeated Adam Kownacki, that there is plenty of life in the Californian yet.
There will be plenty of fans expressing the view that Ruiz Jr should have blown Arreola away if he still has aspirations of regaining his old titles but, of course, losing 27 1/2 lbs can have its negative effects until your body becomes accustomed to the changes. The gym cannot tell you how you will perform in a real fight environment.
Ruiz Jr will lose more weight and become a better athlete because of it before his next fight, but he has to be careful because he has to replace the weight that his punches used to have behind them with better technique and more speed.
