Fight Report
In a truly unexpected turn of events at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, the highly anticipated light heavyweight bout between Ben Whittaker and Liam Cameron concluded with a technical split draw after a freak accident in the fifth round. The fight, which had been closely contested up to that point, ended when both fighters tumbled over the top rope, injuring Whittaker.
Whittaker, the 2020 Olympian known for his flashy style and touted as one of boxing's rising stars, faced a stern test in Cameron, a former Commonwealth champion making a comeback after personal struggles. The stark contrast in their careers and styles set the stage for an intriguing matchup.
The early rounds saw Whittaker's speed and skill on display, with the 27-year-old landing crisp jabs and right hands. However, Cameron, 33, showed his experience and toughness, weathering the early storm and finding success with body shots and counterpunches as the fight progressed, demonstrating his resilience.
By the fifth round, the tide seemed to be turning. Looking increasingly uncomfortable, Whittaker received a warning for low blows from referee Victor Loughlin. As Cameron pressed forward, pushing Whittaker to the ropes, both fighters lost their balance and fell over the top rope, with Cameron landing on top of Whittaker.
The fall resulted in a leg injury for Whittaker, rendering him unable to continue. As per British Boxing Board of Control regulations, the fight went to the scorecards after five rounds, resulting in a split technical draw with scores of 58-57 Whittaker, 58-57 Cameron, and 58-58.
This unexpected conclusion leaves both fighters' futures in question. Whittaker, now 8-0-1 (5 KOs), will need to recover from his injury and reassess his approach, while Cameron, improving to 23-6-1 (10 KOs), proved he can still compete at a high level despite his past setbacks.
The incident adds another chapter to Whittaker's growing notoriety, though not in the manner he would have hoped. As he was taken to the hospital for evaluation, the boxing world was left to ponder what might have been in this truncated contest between two fighters at very different stages of their careers.
