Algenis Mendez retires after eight rounds against Batyr Akhmedov

Los Angeles based, Uzbekistan born Batyr Akhmedov kept steady pressure on former IBF world super-featherweight champion Algenis Mendez until the 35-year-old Dominican decided to take himself out of the fight, citing an injured hand as the reason. Batyr vs Mendez was on the undercard of Gervonta Davis vs Mario Barrios WBA super-lightweight title fight from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

Batyr, who lost a controversial decision to tonights headliner Mario Barrios for the WBA trinket in September 2019, was just too big, strong, and hungry for Mendez who loses more than he wins these days. 

Batyr will be hoping to get a second shot at the title although it might be against Barrios once again for the vacant crown if Davis, a 5-1 favourite comes through as expected.
