Richie Fontaine Biography
Born Richard Elder Fontaine in the small town of Fairview, Montana, Richie Fontaine would become a notable figure in weight divisions between featherweight and welterweight during the 1930s. Growing up in nearby Missoula, Fontaine's journey into the world of boxing began on June 16, 1931, when he made his professional debut at the age of 15.
Throughout his 12-year, 8-month career, Fontaine amassed a record of 40 wins, 28 losses, and 11 draws, showcasing his tenacity and determination in the ring. Guided by managers such as Bud Taylor, Benny Ford, and Gus Wilson, Fontaine faced off against some of the most formidable opponents of his era, including Baby Arizmendi, Midget Wolgast, and the legendary Henry Armstrong.
Fontaine's first encounter with Armstrong occurred on March 31, 1936, in a gruelling 10-round battle. Despite Fontaine's best efforts, Armstrong's skill and prowess proved too much, resulting in a points decision loss for the Montana native. Undeterred, Fontaine continued to hone his craft and climb the ranks of the featherweight division.
Three years later, on October 20, 1939, Fontaine again found himself face-to-face with Armstrong, this time with the World Welterweight Title on the line at the Civic Auditorium in Seattle. Fontaine succumbed to a third-round TKO loss.
Richie Fontaine's boxing journey ended in 1944. Tragically, Fontaine passed away on April 5, 1963, at the age of 47.
