Ricardo Rafael Sandoval Biography
Ricardo Rafael Sandoval, known throughout the boxing world as “El Niño,” has emerged as one of the most compelling American flyweights of his era. Born on February 5, 1999, in Montclair, California, and residing in nearby Rialto, Sandoval grew up in a region known for its tough gym culture and Latino boxing heritage. He began boxing at the age of ten, developing a fundamentally sound style in the U.S. amateur system. While records do not detail a decorated amateur career, those formative years forged the relentless, technically sharp operator that Sandoval would become and laid the foundation for a meteoric rise through the professional ranks.
Sandoval’s professional debut came on June 18, 2016, against Adalberto Solares at Plaza Fundadores in Los Algodones, Mexico. Displaying the poise and finishing instincts that would become his hallmarks, Sandoval stopped Solares via third-round technical knockout. From the outset, his career was defined by both a willingness to travel and a fearless matchmaking philosophy. He quickly established a reputation as a hard-hitting pressure fighter, compiling a 16–0 record within three years, with 11 victories secured inside the distance. Not just content with beating journeymen, Sandoval began facing better opposition early, picking up wins over the likes of Marco Sustaita and Gilbert Gonzalez, the latter dispatched in five rounds in November 2019.
The COVID-19 pandemic stalled many careers in 2020, but Sandoval managed to stay active. In February that year, he showcased his precision and tough inside game by knocking out Raymond Tabugon in the seventh round. The major inflection point in his ascent came on June 25, 2021, when he faced Welshman Jay Harris in an IBF flyweight world title eliminator as the away fighter in Bolton, England. Labelled an underdog entering the contest, Sandoval executed a brilliant fight plan, breaking down Harris with body shots before a pair of knockdowns in the eighth. The referee halted the contest following the second, cementing Sandoval’s reputation as a ruthless finisher on foreign soil.
After a routine victory over Carlos Buitrago later in 2021, Sandoval moved towards the world title picture. However, in July 2022, he confronted Costa Rican contender David Jiménez in a WBA title eliminator in Los Angeles. Despite entering as a heavy favourite, Sandoval was knocked down in the eleventh round and dropped a narrow majority decision, many ringside observers questioned. The defeat, though controversial, marked Sandoval’s first learning experience at the world level, but his stock remained high due to his overall performance and the closeness of the bout.
Sandoval’s response to this setback underscored his championship mettle. He returned in February 2023 with a dominant second-round knockout over Jerson Ortiz. In the following months, he recorded solid victories over Rocco Santomauro and Victor Efrain Sandoval, steadily building his status within the top ten of all four major sanctioning organisations. July 2024 became a career-defining period when Sandoval captured the WBC Silver Flyweight title by dramatically knocking out former WBO world champion Ángel Acosta in the tenth round at Toyota Arena, Ontario. Acosta, himself a world-class operator, pushed Sandoval hard but ultimately succumbed to a perfectly placed assault in the final stanza. This performance catapulted Sandoval into true world title contention and demonstrated his capacity to carry power into the championship rounds.
With the division’s landscape heating up, Sandoval made his mark on the major scene in early 2025. Victories over Saleto Henderson and a rematch triumph against Carlos Buitrago were earned through his high volume, educated pressure, and superior stamina. As his reputation grew, Sandoval signed with Golden Boy Promotions, aligning himself with a globally recognised stable and ensuring a pathway to elite-level opportunities.
The pinnacle of Sandoval’s journey arrived on July 30, 2025, in Yokohama, Japan. Across the ring was Kenshiro Teraji, a revered two-division unified world champion widely regarded as a pound-for-pound great. For twelve tumultuous rounds, Sandoval pressed Teraji behind a disciplined jab and incisive body work. In the fifth, Teraji dropped Sandoval with a sharp right hand, but the Californian rose, regrouped, and swung momentum back his way with intense pressure over the championship rounds. After a tense wait, the scorecards revealed a split decision in favour of Sandoval, with judges tallying 115–112 and 117–110 for him and 114–113 for Teraji. The result sent shockwaves through the boxing world, as Sandoval dethroned Teraji to claim the unified WBC and WBA flyweight titles, becoming the first American flyweight world champion since Brian Viloria.
