Murray Sutherland Biography
Murray Sutherland, affectionately known as the "Scottish Express," was a formidable figure in boxing, particularly in the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. Born on April 10, 1953, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Sutherland would go on to leave an indelible mark on the sport.
Sutherland's professional boxing career began on August 18, 1977, at 24, with a loss to Kevin Downey in Halifax, Nova Scotia, by way of a unanimous decision over 6 rounds. Five months later, a second loss, a third-round Tko to Willie Featherstone in Toronto, prompted a move to the USA, where he got on the winning sheet.
In his fifth outing, Murray was matched with unbeaten Dwight Davison, resulting in another loss. Despite the tough matchmaking, Sutherland was learning on the job.
Fourteen wins in his next fifteen fights led to a meeting with the unbeaten Michael Spinks, and although another L was added to his record, Sutherland now knew he could hang with the very best in the world.
A run of eleven straight wins gave Sutherland his first shot at a world title against Matthew Saad Muhammad for the WBC light heavyweight title. Despite his valiant effort, Sutherland lost via a controversial 9th-round stoppage. This setback did not deter him, as he soon found himself in another world title bout, rematching Michael Spinks for the WBA light heavyweight title in April 1982. Unfortunately, he suffered a TKO loss in the 8th round.
Sutherland's perseverance and adaptability were key factors in his eventual success. After struggling to find his ideal weight class, oscillating between middleweight and light heavyweight, he discovered his niche in the super middleweight division. This realization culminated in his most historic achievement: winning the inaugural IBF super middleweight world title.
On March 28, 1984, at Harrah's in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Sutherland outboxed Ernie Singletary over 15 rounds to secure a unanimous decision victory (146-139, 146-139, and 147-140). This win made him the first-ever world super middleweight champion and marked a career highlight. Sutherland's defensive boxing skills, honed during his training in Scotland, were instrumental in this victory. He employed a strategy of defence, jabs, and body assaults to demoralize Singletary, showcasing his mastery of the ring.
Sutherland's reign as champion was not without its challenges. He lost the IBF super middleweight title to Park Chong-pal in July 1984 but continued to fight, accumulating 47 wins, 14 losses, and 1 draw by the end of his career. His final professional outing occurred on February 25, 1986, at the Premier Center in Sterling Heights, Michigan, where he lost to Lindell Holmes via TKO in the 3rd round, surrendering the USBA Super Middleweight Title.
Throughout his 8-year, 6-month career, Sutherland demonstrated remarkable resilience and a deep passion for the sport. Despite facing Hall of Famers and world-class opponents, he remained a formidable contender, earning the respect of his peers and fans alike. His legacy as the inaugural super middleweight champion and his contributions to the evolution of the division solidify his place in boxing history. Now residing in Bay City, Michigan, Sutherland's impact on the sport continues to be celebrated by boxing enthusiasts worldwide.
