Magne Havnaa Biography

Magne Havnaa remains a historic figure in Norwegian boxing, celebrated as the country’s first and, to date, only professional world champion. Born in Risør, Norway, on September 16, 1963, Havnaa developed his craft at Sentrum BK in Oslo under the guidance of Leif Hvalby, a respected amateur champion and former sparring partner of Danish EBU champion Christian Christensen. His early amateur career was marked by notable achievements, including the Scandinavian Junior Amateur heavyweight title in 1981 and three consecutive Norwegian heavyweight championships from 1984 to 1986. Havana represented Norway at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, competing as a heavyweight, but his Olympic campaign ended in the opening round when he was stopped by Sweden’s Håkan Brock.

With professional boxing banned in Norway at the time, Havnaa launched his pro career in Denmark, signing with the influential promoter Mogens Palle. His professional debut came on October 3, 1986, at Idrætshuset in Copenhagen, where he outpointed a young Johnny Nelson, who would later become a long-reigning world cruiserweight champion over four rounds. Havnaa’s early career was built on steady progress through the Scandinavian and European scenes, with victories over solid opposition such as Alfonso Ratliff, Roy Smith, and Lennie Howard. He demonstrated durability and punching power, registering 11 knockouts among his 19 wins.

Havnaa’s first major title opportunity came in May 1989 when he challenged for the vacant European cruiserweight title in Italy, but he was stopped in five rounds by Angelo Rottoli. Later that year, he faced Boone Pultz for the vacant WBO cruiserweight title, losing a split decision in Copenhagen. Undeterred, Havnaa secured a rematch with Pultz on May 17, 1990, in Aars, Denmark, where he stopped the American in five rounds to claim the WBO world cruiserweight championship and etch his name in Norwegian sporting history. He successfully defended the title twice, outpointing Daniel Neto and edging Tyrone Booze by split decision. His reign was brief, as he vacated the title after his second defence, never losing it in the ring.

Havnaa faced many European and American contenders throughout his professional journey, including world-class fighters like Boone Pultz, Tyrone Booze, and Alfonso Ratliff. His career was characterized by a willingness to travel and take on tough opposition, often fighting in Denmark due to the Norwegian ban on professional boxing. Havnaa’s style was marked by aggression and stamina, attributes that often allowed him to outlast and outwork his opponents, even when he was not the most technically refined boxer in the ring.

Havnaa’s final professional bout took place on February 12, 1993, at Randers Hallen in Denmark, where Roger McKenzie stopped him in the sixth round. He retired at age 29 with a professional record of 19 wins (11 by knockout) and 3 losses, never having been stopped in a world title fight. After boxing, he returned to Risør, living a quieter life until his untimely death in a boating accident in May 2004 at the age of 40. His legacy endures through his son, Kai Robin Havnaa, who has also pursued a career in the cruiserweight division.

Magne Havnaa’s career, though relatively short, left an indelible mark on Norwegian boxing. His achievements paved the way for future generations and provided a rare moment of international boxing glory for Norway, a country with a modest professional boxing tradition. His resilience in the ring and historic world title win remain sources of pride and inspiration for Norwegian sports fans.
