Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, born Edward Dean Gregory on April 30, 1952, in Brooklyn, New York, is a notable figure in boxing, both as a formidable fighter and a respected trainer. Known by his nickname "Flame," Muhammad's career is marked by his lightning-fast hands and resilient spirit, which defined his time in the ring.

Muhammad's journey into boxing began in his amateur days, where he made a significant impact. Fighting under his birth name, Eddie Gregory, he won two New York Golden Gloves Championships in 1971 and 1972. These victories were against future middleweight champion Vito Antuofermo in 1971 and Patrick Maloney of the Leatherpushers Athletic Club in 1972. His amateur career also included being an alternate on the 1972 Olympic team, a testament to his early prowess.

Turning professional on September 16, 1972, Muhammad debuted at the Felt Forum in New York City, winning a first-round knockout against Joe Grier. This victory set the tone for a career spanning 16 years, including 59 professional bouts.
