Donny Lalonde Biography
Donny Lalonde, known as βGolden Boy,β is a Canadian former professional boxer who primarily campaigned at light heavyweight and also competed at cruiserweight. An orthodox boxer-puncher, he stood about 6 ft 2 in with a reach listed around 77 inches.
Lalonde turned professional on April 24, 1980, and rose quickly on the Canadian circuit, winning the national light-heavyweight title in the mid-1980s and using that platform to break into North American contention. A points win over seasoned contender Mustafa Hamsho in May 1987 brought him the WBC Continental Americas light-heavyweight title and set up his world-level run. On November 27 1987, he stopped Eddie Davis to capture the vacant WBC light-heavyweight championship, then made a successful defence on May 29 1988, by halting former titleholder Leslie Stewart in Port of Spain.
His peak period continued with a high-profile meeting against Sugar Ray Leonard on November 7 1988, at Caesars Palace, where Lalondeβs WBC light-heavyweight belt and the inaugural WBC super-middleweight title were both at stake. Lalonde scored an early knockdown before losing by ninth-round technical knockout in a bout remembered for its dual-title stipulation. He remained a notable figure into the early 1990s, facing former champion Bobby Czyz over twelve rounds in May 1992, and later returned for sporadic contests before retiring from the sport.
Lalondeβs final fight came on July 5 2003, a ten-round decision defeat to Virgil Hill in Winnipeg. His professional ledger stands at 41 wins, 5 losses and 1 draw, with 33 victories by knockout. Notable opponents across his career include Sugar Ray Leonard, Leslie Stewart, Eddie Davis, Mustafa Hamsho, Bobby Czyz and Virgil Hill. His reputation was that of a heavy-handed, front-foot boxer-puncher with a powerful right hand who produced stoppages at the elite and domestic levels during a career spanning from 1980 to 2003.
