On Saturday, June 21, 2003, Richard Williams faced challenger Sergio Martinez at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, England. This event was promoted by Matchroom Boxing and featured the IBO World Super-welterweight Title, with Williams defending the title for the fourth time. Both fighters entered the ring with impressive records; Martinez held a record of 28-1-1, while Williams had a record of 17-1-1.
At the weigh-in, Sergio Martinez registered at 152¾ lbs, while Richard Williams weighed in slightly heavier at 153¾ lbs. Hailing from Quilmes, Argentina, Martinez displayed slick skills and real fortitude throughout the match, while Williams, a resident of Stockwell, London, showcased his own strength and resilience.
The match proceeded with both fighters having their fair share of success throughout the bout. Ultimately, it was Sergio Martinez who emerged victorious, beating Richard Williams by unanimous decision. The three judges' scores reflected the unanimous decision, with John Coyle scoring the fight 112-115, Terry O'Connor at 110-115, and Andre Van Grootenbruel with a score of 110-116.
Years later in an interview with boxingnewsonline.net, Martinez said “The first three rounds were hard. Richard broke my nose and the left side of my jaw. He broke four of my teeth at the roots. In round three he knocked me down. In round six he cut one of my eyes and after the fight the doctor put in 15 stitches. In the seventh, he fractured two of my ribs and in round 11 he knocked me down again. But my mind was very ready for a war, my motivation was extreme. This fight was the opportunity of my life and I couldn’t lose.”
