The second defence of Sergey Kovalev's WBO light heavyweight title at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall Ballroom on March 29, 2014, revealed new dimensions to the champion's skillset while maintaining his knockout streak. The previously undefeated Cedric Agnew (26-1, 13 KOs) forced Kovalev into his most extended fight since 2010 before succumbing to body shots at 0:58 of round seven.
The fight marked several firsts for both fighters. Agnew suffered his first career knockdown in round two from a left jab-hook combination that exposed his positional vulnerability. Kovalev touched canvas for the first time in his career in round four following a headbutt, though referee Samuel Viruet correctly ruled it a slip. The champion also faced unprecedented adversity, sustaining cuts over both eyes - the right from a round four headbutt and the left from a round six elbow.
Agnew's southpaw defensive strategy, maintaining high guards while seeking counter opportunities, proved initially challenging for Kovalev. However, despite these obstacles, the judges' identical 60-52 scorecards reflected Kovalev's dominance. The champion methodically broke down Agnew's guard with left hooks to the body, scoring additional knockdowns in round six and the fight-ending knockdown in round seven.
The victory improved Kovalev's record to 24-0-1 with 22 knockouts but came amid controversy surrounding a potential unification bout with Adonis Stevenson. Stevenson had recently switched from HBO to Showtime, effectively killing negotiations. In his post-fight interview with Max Kellerman, Kovalev's frustration manifested in an expletive-laden challenge to Stevenson.
The cuts sustained during the fight forced the cancellation of Kovalev's planned May showcase in Russia, altering his career trajectory for the remainder of 2014. Post-fight medical examination suggested Agnew suffered both a broken rib and nose from the encounter.
