On June 24, 1995, at the Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Roy Jones Jr. made the second defence of his IBF World Super Middleweight Title against Vinny Pazienza. With 11,748 fans in attendance, Jones delivered a dominant performance, solidifying his reputation as one of the sport's elite.
Jones, entering the fight as a 12-1 betting favourite, boasted an unblemished record of 28-0-0. Pazienza, with a record of 40-5-0, came into the bout as a former lightweight and super welterweight champion looking to make his mark in the super middleweight division. Both fighters tipped the scales at the division limit of 168 pounds, with Jones guaranteed at least $2 million based on his share of gate and pay-per-view revenue, while Pazienza was set to earn $1.35 million.
From the outset, Jones controlled the action with his superior speed, accuracy, and reflexes. Through six rounds, he outlanded Pazienza with 173 connected punches out of 308 thrown, a remarkable 56% success rate. Pazienza, known for his resilience, managed to land 45 of 110 punches thrown, a 41% connect rate, but his offence was no match for Jones' precision.
The sixth round proved decisive. Jones dropped Pazienza three times with explosive combinations, leaving no doubt about the outcome. Referee Tony Orlando stepped in at 2:58 of the round, declaring Jones the winner by technical knockout.
This victory marked Jones' second successful defence of the IBF title, a belt he won in November 1994 by outclassing James Toney. In March 1995, his first defence ended with a first-round knockout of Antoine Byrd.
With another clinical performance in Atlantic City, Jones continued dominating the super middleweight division and cemented his standing as one of the most gifted fighters in boxing history. For Pazienza, the fight underscored the difficulty of competing against an opponent of Jones' calibre despite his determination and prior accomplishments.
