On September 7, 2002, at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon, Roy Jones Jr. defended his multiple light heavyweight titles against Clinton Woods. The bout, sanctioned for the WBC, WBA, IBF, IBO, NBA, IBA, WBF, and Ring Magazine World Light Heavyweight Titles, drew a crowd of 16,229 spectators and was televised on HBO Sports. Jones entered the ring with an impressive record of 46-1-0, weighing in at 174Âľ pounds, while Woods, holding a 32-1-0 record, weighed 174 pounds.
Jones was making his 11th defence of the WBC title, 10th of the WBA, 7th of the IBF, and additional defences of several other belts, including The Ring Magazine title. Woods came into the fight ranked #1 by the WBC, but the difference in skill level became apparent from the opening bell. Jones dominated the action with his superior hand speed, accuracy, and movement, consistently outstanding and outmanoeuvring Woods.
Throughout the fight, Jones connected on 140 of his 300 punches, landing at a 47% success rate, compared to Woods’ 39 of 166 punches, which amounted to a 23% accuracy. Jones’s ability to mix power punches with precise jabs kept Woods off-balance and unable to mount a meaningful offence. The scorecards reflected the performance gap, with judges Gus Mercurio, Jack Woodburn, and Omar Mintun Sr. scoring the bout 50-42, 50-43, and 50-44, respectively, after five rounds.
The referee, Jay Nady, oversaw a clean contest, but Woods’ corner recognized the futility of their fighter’s situation. With Woods absorbing significant punishment and offering little in return, his corner decided to stop the fight, throwing in the towel after the sixth round. HBO’s unofficial judge, Harold Lederman, had Jones comfortably ahead, scoring the contest 50-45 through five rounds.
The fight reinforced Jones’ standing as one of the era’s most dominant fighters, showcasing his technical prowess and athletic superiority. Woods, though a determined and game challenger, was outclassed. The outcome solidified Jones’ legacy while demonstrating the gulf between an elite champion and a top contender.
